When cross-hatching is just used for say-colouring in a piece- it can make a picture unbalanced, or draw attention away from the picture's direction. In these cases the lines on the lighter or paler side can appear to be scratched without function and can be an irritant. I have seen this style before and that particular artist was not warned that you can only add more lines, not take lines away. Because of this the picture was very top heavy.
I like this picture. When looking at the picture as a whole you see that less is more. The slant of the lesser strokes gives direction to the eye at it views the piece. True the lines to the lower part of picture look scratchy- i put this down to an awkward position with photoshop. The lines grow, right to left and leads the viewer to the lined brow and focused iris. The lighter strokes lining the eye gives the appearance of small eyelashes giving the lining a mixture of clearly defined shape yet a delicate feminine glow. I found myself working out what angle of the face the artist drew their inner model, or what the model was thinking. The broad upward stroke leads the face down, making me believe that there is a frown or look of focus upon the face. The wider, unfocused pupil however indicates a calmer feeling within the person-or of a darker surroundings. From the positioning of the iris within the ball we see an indication that we are seeing a small segment of a three quarter profile. As such despite the appearance of a sideways glance the model, in my mind a woman, is in fact looking directly at a person in front of her.
Now i am not saying that this drawing is perfect. The shaping of the pupil and iris appears disjointed and i can see impatience in the zigzagged lines and with more time spent of this it could be fixed.
As i said, less is more with this style of drawing however my feelings are positive and i spent several pleasant minutes viewing and analysing this piece.
I look forward to your future work
